Festival of the Holy Cross

Today we commemorate the discovery of the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ by St. Helen, mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine.

Patriarchal Day

Today we also celebrate the consecration of His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas as Patriarch of Antioch. His Holiness was consecrated on this day in 1980. Let us all pray for His Holiness that God may strengthen him and preserve his life for us for many years to come.

New Curriculum for Sunday School

We will be following a new curriculum for Sunday School beginning next week. The new curriculum is very comprehensive and encompasses the essence of Syriac Orthodoxy. Classes will be divided into 3 levels as follows: Level 1: Ages 3-5 Level 2: Ages 6-8 Level 3: Ages 9-12 It is important that children attend every class as there will be strict graduation requirements. I would like to thank Ms. Linda Khoury for making the Sunday School resource materials available to us.

Nativity of the Theotokos

Today we celebrate the birth of St. Mary, the Theotokos. "Theotokos" is a Greek word that means "God-bearer" or "Mother of God." This title was assigned to St. Mary by the early Christian Church during the Third Ecumenical Council held at Ephesus in the year 431. The competing view at this council was that St. Mary should be called "Christotokos" or "Mother of Christ." This view had been put forth by Nestorius, the then Patriarch of Constantinople. However Nestorius was found to be in error in that he overemphasized the human nature of Christ at the expense of the divine. Therefore the term "Theotokos" was accepted to show that St. Mary did not simply give birth to a man but to God who became man.

New Site Design

As you may have noticed I've finally given the site a new look. I hope you all like it. There isn't too much information here just yet but I hope to add more as time permits. Special thanks goes out to Jolly John who supplied the "About Us" section.
